Doge is a slang term for “dog” that is mostly affiliated with images of Shiba Inus (nicknamed “Shibe”). These images may be revised to alter the dog’s presence or captioned with interior monologues in Comic Sans font. Since 2017, Ironic Doge formats have surpassed their original editions in popularity.
Atsuko Sato, a Japanese kindergarten teacher, posted several pictures of her rescue-adopted Shiba Inu dog Kabosu to her private blog on February 23rd, 2010. A curious image of Kabosu sitting on a sofa with raised eyebrows staring sideways at the camera was among the images.
The famous doge meme is based on this 2010 picture, and it became popular in late 2013, earning it the title of “top meme” of the year by Know Your Meme. In December 2013, the Dogecoin crypto was freed, and the Shiba Inu was promoted on Josh Wise’s NASCAR car as part of a sponsorship contract.
A Google Easter egg, a Delta Air Lines safety video, embers of the United States Congress and the video for “Weird Al” Yankovic’s song “Word Crimes” have all attributed to Doge.
Thanks to its association with Dogecoin, which reached a market capitalization of over $90 billion dollars in May 2021, the meme saw a renaissance in popularity at the end of the decade and the beginning of the 2020s. Doge was called one of most outstanding Internet memes of the 2010s by many online surveys and media outlets.
The huge market cap of Dogecoin is also the reason why Doge is connected to the slogan “to the moon”. That slogan indicates prices of an asset (esp. crypto coins) are foreseen to go “through the roof” or “extremely high”.
Doge as Astronaut
This is the reason for the following Meme called Doge Astronaut. It is a combination of a NASA Astronaut image and Doge’s head.
Doge Astronaut symbolizes therefore that the crypto coin Dogecoin will go to the moon and Doge is preparing for this journey.
